Excerpt from the book

"Two hundred metres ahead, we stumbled upon a gruesome sight. There were seven young men lying in the middle of the road, tied together. They were anywhere between eighteen and twenty-five years old. They had been "necklaced". Around each man's neck was a burning car tyre. Their bodies bore signs of torture. Knives had gashed their skin, blunt instruments had bruised their joints, and cigarette stubs had burnt holes all over their bodies. Their throats had been slit. Their eyes were closed, their bodies still. But I thought I heard one young man gasp. I could have sworn I saw his toe twitch. I saw a gush of blood spurt from his slit throat. And then, nothing."
