Now comes the news that 50 million Indians have been lifted out of poverty. Have they really been lifted out or is this statistical chicanery. The World Bank calculates that if you earn less than $1.25 a day you are poor. In India, that figure has been downgraded to 25 cents. That would automatically lift millions out of poverty statistically. But in reality are they not poor still. Cost of living is still cheap in India compared to other countries. Still, how much does Rs.1,000 a month fetch you in today's India.
